At Malvern Central School in Victoria, Teacher Sally took her Year 3 class’s inquiry topic on biodiversity and turned it into a meaningful fundraising project with Expressions, the tea towel and tote bag company trusted by schools nationwide.
Each student illustrated a plant or animal that plays a vital role in ecosystems. Supporting Biodiversity Through Fundraising
The project went beyond creating tea towel keepsakes and tote bags – it was about making a difference. Profits from the fundraiser were donated to the Carbon Neutral Charitable Fund (CNCF), helping to plant more trees and preserve Australia’s biodiversity.
The students’ efforts led to the donation of 80 trees, a tangible impact that connects their classroom learning to real-world environmental change. As Teacher Sally explained:
"We wanted the students to understand what biodiversity means, what it looks like in different ecosystems and why it is important. The students researched different ecosystems and found out the kinds of animals and plants which live in those ecosystems and how each one is important in maintaining the health of the ecosystem. We then looked at what we as humans are going to do to help support biodiversity. From this came the idea to raise money for an environmental charity that does just that. So we chose Carbon Neutral Charitable Fund (CNCF) who are dedicated to helping maintain biodiversity and planting more trees.
